Senator Johanns Cosponors Anti-Earmark

WASHINGTON – Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) today cosponsored the bipartisan Earmark Elimination Act, which would establish a permanent ban on earmarks. Additionally, the legislation adds a new tool for enforcing this earmark ban through a new Senate point of order.

“Earmarks are a symbol of wasteful Washington spending and I hope we can eliminate them permanently as we focus on getting our fiscal house in order,” Johanns said. “The current ban on earmarks ends at the end of this year and some legislators are clamoring for the return of this practice. I believe earmarking lacks the transparency Americans deserve from their government.”

The Earmark Elimination Act was recently introduced by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.).
