Bob Kerrey’s Greatest Hits: To The Left of Nelson on Balanced Budget Amendment
Former Nebraska Senator-Turned-New Yorker Does Not Support A Balanced Budget Amendment
LINCOLN - As former Nebraska Democrat Senator-turned-New York City resident Bob Kerrey returns to the Cornhusker State, Nebraskans may be surprised to learn where Mr. Kerrey stands on a wide variety of issues, including a balanced budget amendment.
During his tenure in the Senate, Kerrey strongly opposed a balanced budget amendment, claiming the legislation was bad economic policy. Kerrey even said that a balanced budget amendment would sully the Constitution.
Then in 1997, Kerrey stood by his out of touch rhetoric when he voted against a balanced budget amendment, which fell one vote short of passing the Senate.

“Every day families in Nebraska have to balance their checkbook but Washington is exempt from this practice because Bob Kerrey provided the deciding vote against a balanced budget amendment,” said Nebraska Republican Party Chairman Mark Fahelson. ”With our national debt at $15.2 trillion we can’t afford Kerrey’s tax-and-spend policies, instead we need a common sense, fiscally conservative Republican who will fix our country’s spending problems and get our country working once again.”
